Pestilence Throughout The Ages

History is rife with events that have influenced and shaped our nation as well as the world. World War I is a dramatic example with the loss of 8.5 million lives. But these major events sometimes pale next to public health disasters that have produced even more devastating results. The influenza epidemic of 1918-1919, which followed on the heels of WWI, killed more than 20 million people.

The library’s current exhibit, “Pestilence Throughout the Ages,” was created by Pat Auflick, the Outreach Services librarian, and her son Andrew Padua. It traces some of the major epidemics throughout history, from the plague of the Middle Ages on to the modern experience of HIV/AIDS, and highlights the public health responses that have been undertaken to understand and combat them. Visit the exhibit during April and May at the Arizona Health Sciences Library.

The library is open to the general public from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm. UA faculty, staff and students have 24 hour access with the UA CatCard.
