Library Computer Lab - Information for Instructors

CAI/AV Program Purchase Support for AHSC Faculty

Collection Services staff can assist faculty find and obtain evaluation copies of course-related computer-assisted instruction (CAI) software and audiovisual (AV) programs which are commercially available. We can help you find out if a program on a particular topic even exists. Don't hesitate to contact us just because you don't have a specific title in mind.

The library reserves a portion of its collection development budget for the purchase of course-related CAI and AV programs. CAI and AV programs can be quite costly. We can help you determine what would be the best and most cost-effective way of obtaining a program (multiple copy discount, site license, Web access, etc.). The library may also be able to purchase the program or pay for a significant portion of the total cost. We can also assist you in developing a winning proposal for a UA instructional technology grant.

Please contact Dave Piper (dpiper@ahsl.arizona.edu or 520/626-2529) to find out more.

Placing Items on AV Reserve

If there are audiovisuals in the library's collection that your students need to use intensively or if you have personal copies of AV programs that you would like to make available to your students in a convenient way, you may wish to have them placed on AV Reserve. (See also AV Reserve Collection.)

Many instructors make course-related AV materials available to students in this manner. Items placed on AV Reserve either do not circulate outside the library or, when multiple copies are available, circulate for abbreviated time periods (usually 24 hours). This permits an entire class to have access to a program within a short period of time.

The instructor specifies how long the item should remain on reserve. Many items are placed on reserve indefinitely. Reserve items can be located in ALOE, the library's catalog, in the usual ways as well as by Instructor Name and Course Name.

Contact us if you have any questions about this service or if you would like to place item(s) on AV Reserve.

Booking Audiovisual (AV) Programs

Instructors regularly use library AV programs in their classes. Booking a program ensures that the program is available when the instructor needs it. If you let us know at least 7 days in advance of the show date that a particular program is needed, we will "book" that program so that it is held for you. Once a program is booked, it is still available to other users for use in the library, but it may not be checked out--except by the instructor or someone he or she designates to pick up the program. If the program is not picked up by the end of the day for which it was booked, it is returned to its regular location and the booking is expired.

Tip: Many instructors provide us with a list of the programs they'll need and the dates they need them at the very beginning of the semester. We take care of the rest. Then, all that is necessary is to come by the library and check out the booked item anytime within 7 days of the show date including the show date itself.

Contact us for more information or if you would like to book an AV program.
