What is the Library's policy about loaning laptops?

The Arizona Health Sciences Library (AHSL) provides laptop computers equipped with wireless ethernet cards for loan to eligible borrowers for use within the Arizona Health Sciences Library. The laptops are configured with Microsoft Office and Windows 2000, Internet Explorer and several accessory programs. The laptops provide access to the AHSL's digital library and other university web-based resources, e-mail and the Internet. The privilege of access is governed by the following policies:

Who is eligible to use this service?

This service is available to University of Arizona Health Sciences Center students only, i.e., students in the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and the School of Health Professions. To borrow laptops students must be currently enrolled and registered AHSL users in good standing.

When are laptops available for check out?

A limited number of laptops is available for checkout. Priority use for library laptops is for library instructional use. The library, therefore, does not guarantee availability of laptops for checkout. When laptops are availalbe, they will only be lent during those hours that a library staff member is on duty. Generally these hours are Monday - Thursday 6 am - 10 pm, Friday 6 am - 5 pm, Saturday 9 am - 5 pm, Sunday 2 pm - 10 pm.

How do I check out a laptop?

Laptops must be checked out in person from the AHSL Loan Desk for exclusive use within the library. A current and valid CatCard and driver's license (or equivalent ID) are required for laptop checkouts. The driver's license or equivalent ID will be kept at the Loan Desk while the laptop is checked out. Eligible borrowers must sign and date the AHSL "Laptop Equipment Use Agreement" and must do so each time a laptop is borrowed.

How long can laptops be checked out?

Laptops may be borrowed for a four-hour period and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If laptops are checked out less than four hours before the last library staff member departs for the day, the check out period will be adjusted accordingly. All laptops must be returned while library staff is on duty. Depending on equipment availability, borrowers may renew laptop loans for one additional three-hour period. Renewals must be made during those hours that a library staff member is on duty. Laptops MUST be returned to the Loan Desk in order to be renewed.

What if I return the laptop after the time it's due?

If a laptop is not returned within 30 minutes of the time it is due, the borrower will be charged an overdue fine at the rate of $5.00 for each half hour the laptop is overdue.

Time overdue: ½ hour 1 hour 1½ hours Plus $5 for every additional ½ hour, up to the replacement value of the laptop.
Fine amount: $5.00 $10.00 $15.00

If laptop equipment is returned damaged, the user will be charged the repair or replacement cost plus a processing fee of $30.00. If laptop equipment is lost or stolen while checked out, the borrower will be charged the full replacement cost of the missing equipment plus the processing fee. NOTE: At the time of this writing, the approximate replacement cost of a laptop with its wireless network adapter is $2,800.00.

NEVER leave laptop equipment unattended. You are responsible for the equipment you check out. If you entrust equipment to another person and damage or loss occurs, you will still be held responsible.

Are there restrictions?

The Library's laptops must be used within the Library. Library users accessing the University network from within the library are subject to the following policies:

Misuse of computing and network resources or non-compliance with written usage policies may result in loss of your network access via this service.

What if I need assistance with using applications on the laptop?
