What do you mean by "network access"?

The Arizona Health Sciences Library (AHSL) provides network access from various locations in the Library for users who supply their own computers. This network access allows use of the electronic library and other university resources, e-mail and the Internet. Network printing is not available. The privilege of access is governed by AHSL and University of Arizona appropriate use policies, which permit health-related and academic use.

Who is eligible to use this service?

All University of Arizona student, faculty or staff, or UMC employees are eligible for this service. A current UA identification card or UMC badge is required to become a registered AHSL user.

What equipment do I need?

Both wired ethernet and wireless ethernet (also known as wireless lan or wifi) are supported. If you wish to use the AHSL's wireless network, your wireless network adapter may be of type 802.11b, 802.11g or 802.11 a/b/g. Currently, 802.11a cards are not supported.

What do I need to do?

To register your laptop please visit the Information Services Desk to verify eligibility. Once eligibility is established, you will be given a handout with instructions to help prepare your computer for network access. These steps are also available online.

Patrons that need technical assistance may contact

Stefan Walz walz@ahsl.arizona.edu 626-4523 or
Jose Solorzano jose@ahsl.arizona.edu 626-2738

to schedule an appointment. Or visit the Information Services Desk Monday through Friday between 8:00am - 4:00pm and a technical assistant will be available to help you. There is no technical assistance on Saturday or Sunday.

Where are the network ports to plug in my computer?

Location of Network-Access Port Map.

Do I have to register every time I want to connect my computer?

No, just once. Periodically you may be asked to revalidate your registration in order to have continued network access. If you purchase a new computer or change your Ethernet adapter, you will need to register the new MAC address.

What else do I need to know?

During high demand periods, you should limit your use of the network access ports to four hours or less. Audible sounds from computers should be kept to a minimum in the library's quiet study areas.

Does "anything go"?

Library users accessing the University network from within the library are subject to the following policies:
Arizona Health Sciences Library's Computer Workstation Appropriate Use Policy
University of Arizona Computer and Network Usage Policy
All applicable law

Misuse of computing and network resources or non-compliance with written usage policies may result in loss of your network access via this service.

What if I don't have my own computer?

You can access electronic library and other university resources, e-mail and the Internet via the library's public workstations and--if you are eligible--via the library's IS Lab workstations (eligibility information) or In-Library Laptops Available for Loan
