Library Computer Lab: Policies

Eligible Users

All AHS Library users may use the health information resources of the Libary Computer Lab. Priority use of resources is given to groups or individuals using those resources as part of a formal instructional (curriculum-based) activity.

Use of general purpose (i.e. non-health information) software and hardware is restricted to the following groups:

  • UA College of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Health Professions students, faculty and staff
  • Arizona Cancer Center, UMC and UPI staff
  • UA Student Health Center staff
  • Graduate students and faculty in other health-related UA programs
  • Health care practitioners licensed in Arizona

Special Notes:

  • In addition to belonging to one of the above groups, each person must have a current AHS Library user ID.
  • Certain individuals, such as visiting faculty or health sciences students from other institutions, may be temporarily granted selected computer lab privileges at the discretion of the Head of the Information Services. These individuals also must have a current AHS Library user ID and abide by all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Computer and network resources are provided for legitimate academic, administrative and health information-related purposes which further the mission of the University.
  • The IS computer lab is subject to the CCIT Computer and Network Usage Policy and other relevant policies (see below). Failure to abide by this policy may result in the revocation of privileges.
  • The library reserves the right to revoke IS computer lab privileges.

Computer Waiting List Policy

Libary Computer Lab computers are available to eligible users only. Library staff may require users to produce ID at any time. Ineligible users will be required to relinquish the computers they are using.

Libary Computer Lab computer use is limited to two hours per user when either all PCs or all Macs are in use and others are waiting to use a computer.  If others are not waiting, eligible lab users can continue using a computer indefinitely.

Related items:

Any station that is logged in but unoccupied for more than 15 minutes will be logged off and freed for use by others.

IS staff will make a reasonable attempt to save works in progress and will move books, papers, backpacks and the like aside as carefully as possible. IS staff are not responsible for any loss.

Use of Library Classrooms

The library has a hands-on training/microcomputer classroom (Room 2102A) and a large classroom/meeting room (Room 2102).  These rooms are locatedadjacent to room 2101, near the entrance to the library.

Small Computer Classroom
Room 2102A

The small classroom has 12 student PC's and 1 instructor PC. (w/ CD and floppy drives-no zip drives available).

An overhead LCD Projector can be used in conjuction with the instructor computer.

Available software:

  • Internet Explorer
  • Office 2000 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

Food and drink are not allowed in the Small Computer Classroom

Installation of special software for instructional purposes is possible, but must be approved and arranged in advance. Walk-in, last minute changes or requests for such applications or software may not be possible depending on staff support availability.

The Small Computer Classroom is primarily intended to support the library's educational programs and other library-sponsored activities. Apart from this use, it may be reserved by AHSC faculty, staff and students for instructional purposes when that instruction pertains to accessing health information and the use of information technology. There is no charge for this type of use. The classroom may be reserved up to 6 months in advance.

Large Classroom (Room 2102)

The large classroom can accomodate 24 people seated at tables or up to 50 people without tables.

The large classroom can also be arranged to accommodate 24 wireless laptops included with 1 instructor laptop station.

An overhead LCD projector can be used in conjuction with the instructor station.

Also available:

  • Overhead transparency projector
  • ELMO visual overhead projector
  • 35mm slide projector
  • VCR (projected via overhead LCD)
  • Built-in PA system (or In-house PA system).
Large Computer Classroom
Food and drink are not allowed in the Large Computer Classroom

The large classroom is available for use by AHSC faculty, staff and students. It can be scheduled by contacting AHSC Room Scheduling.

Certain classroom uses may entail payment of a fee (see the library’s Policy on room charges). The library reserves the right to establish classroom use priorities in the event of a scheduling conflict.

Policy on Room Charges

At its discretion, the Arizona Health Sciences Library may charge a fee for use of its classrooms (Rooms 2102 and 2102A). Normally the room use fee is applied when the room is being used for commercial or for-profit purposes.

The normal rate is:

$20 per hour
$75 per half day (8am - 12noon or 1pm - 5pm)
$150 per full day. (8am -5pm)


The library reserves the right to determine whether to grant a request for use of the room and whether a room-use fee will be charged.
