Effective January 1, 2005, the library's subscription to MD Consult expired.

Since 1999 when the library first offered MD Consult, the MD Consult annual subscription cost has more than doubled while the amount of content has changed very little. During the same time period, much—but not all—of the MD Consult content has become available to library users through other sources, thus lowering the value of MD Consult.

The library is making every effort to obtain alternate access to the resources in MD Consult that are not otherwise available to its users. We realize there will be some gaps in content coverage and that some of the functionality provided by the MD Consult platform is not replaceable. Nevertheless, we are confident that canceling a very expensive MD Consult subscription and using those funds to acquire additional full-text resources is a more judicious use of very scarce collection dollars.

Below is a listing of the various resources in MD Consult and corresponding alternatives to those resources. This listing will be updated as more information becomes available.

Note: In addition to providing different types of resources (e.g., journals, books, clinical guidelines, patient information handouts) MD Consult also offers the ability to search all of those resources simultaneously. Although we will be able to provide alternate access to most of the resources in MD Consult, the ability to search those different types of resources simultaneously will be lost.

FULL-TEXT E-JOURNALS

All but two MD Consult journal titles are now available to library users through other sources. One of the two titles ceased in 1998.

MD Consult also includes 30 Clinics titles and 33 Year Book titles. None of the Year Books have content more recent than 2001. The library does not expect to replace either of these sets of titles.

The library has recently added almost 100 additional online journal titles:

ELECTRONIC MEDICAL TEXTBOOKS

In early 2005, the library expects to obtain access to several dozen additional medical textbooks which—combined with existing STAT!Ref titles—will provide coverage for most of the major areas of clinical medicine as well as nursing and other health-related areas.

CUSTOMIZABLE PATIENT INFORMATION HANDOUTS

In early 2005, the library expects to have access to a set of customizable patient information handouts comparable to those available at MD Consult.

CLINICAL PRACTICE GUIDELINES

The National Guideline Clearinghouse web site is a comprehensive source of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.

MD Consult provides access to Mosby Drug Consult. Alternative drug information resources available to library users include:

MD CONSULT PERSONAL SUBSCRIPTION OPTION

Another option that may be of interest to some is to purchase a personal subscription to MD Consult. Visit the MD Consult web site at http://www.mdconsult.com/ for additional information.

A free “MerckMedicus edition” of MD Consult is available to licensed physicians via MerckMedicus at http://www.merckmedicus.com. This version appears to be somewhat stripped down from the MD Consult Core Collection that the library subscribed to (fewer textbooks, for example); nevertheless it is similar in many ways. Eligible individuals may wish to examine this option.
